New Jersey Governor Chris Christie laid out the Republican roadmap to victory in November 2012. In a Facebook interview reported in the Washington Post, Christie said "...if unemployment is still around where it is right now, no President's ever gotten re-elected with unemployment at that number."
I had a hunch that was their strategy, but it's nice to have it out in the open.
